Military experts to join search for missing plane

Military experts to join search for missing plane
LONDON • British military investigators are to carry out an underwater search for the plane that vanished with the Argentinian footballer Emiliano Sala on board after his country's government asked Britain to extend the hunt.
The development came as it emerged that two cushions believed to have come from the missing plane washed up on the coast of France, about 32km from the last known location of the aircraft.
Ministry of Defence salvage experts are to work alongside shipwreck specialists hired privately by Sala's family to search for the plane, which vanished above the Channel Islands on Jan 21 en route from France to Cardiff.
Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has identified a "priority search area" of about four square nautical miles (14 sq km) where it believes the wreckage of the plane may lie. However, the start of this operation has been delayed by poor weather.
The active search for the Cardiff striker Sala and the pilot, David Ibbotson, was halted last Thursday by the Guernsey harbour master, sparking an outcry from Sala's family and a host of Argentinian footballers including Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi.
On Wednesday evening, the Argentinian embassy in London suggested the search had been ramped up again after its intervention.
Earlier in the day, it emerged that two blue seat cushions believed to be from the plane had washed up on a French beach.
The AAIB said: "On the morning of Monday, Jan 28, we were advised by the Bureau d'Enquetes et d'Analyses, the French safety investigation authority, that part of a seat cushion had been found on a beach near Surtainville on the Cotentin peninsula.
"A second cushion was found in the same area later that day. From a preliminary examination, we have concluded that it is likely that the cushions are from the missing aircraft."
Shipwreck experts hired by Sala's family with the help of hundreds of thousands of pounds of donations have been preparing to launch their own search.
This week, they revealed they were planning to use a remotely operated vehicle to comb an area of about 25 sq nautical miles and they believed there was a good chance of finding the plane.
Both Sala's experts and the AAIB have said they will be able to work together.

Football: Spanish LaLiga unaware of English Premier League interest in Javier Tebas

BARCELONA (REUTERS) - Spanish LaLiga's organising body has said it does not expect president Javier Tebas to jump ship to the Premier League, responding to British media reports that the Spaniard has emerged as a candidate to become the English top flight's chief executive.
"We are not aware of this supposed interest. That said, if a competition as important as the Premier League is taking note of the work being done by LaLiga, including its president, clubs and employees, it is a source of pride for the entire organisation," a LaLiga spokesman said on Wednesday (Feb 20).
"Javier has a contract with LaLiga and not only is he happy here, he also has responsibilities and challenges which occupy his full attention. This includes the changing broadcast landscape and battling the threat of new competitions - including format changes that put domestic leagues at risk."
The Premier League has struggled to find a successor to long-serving chief executive Richard Scudamore, who stepped down last December after 19 years with the organisation.
Susanna Dinnage, a senior executive at media organisation Discovery, was named as the new chief executive last November but later announced she would not be taking up the role.
Tebas, 56, made headlines by pledging last August to play one LaLiga game per season overseas, although a bid to stage Girona's game against Barcelona in Miami last month fell through after Barca withdrew from it, citing a lack of consensus.

Interest Barcelona (Spain), Feb. 21, 2019 (Reuters/NNN) Spanish La Liga's organising body says it does not expect its President, Javier Tebas, to jump ship to the English Premier League (EPL). Football: Hougang find inspiration in skipper Zulfahmi Arifin to climb to second in the SPL

SINGAPORE - Hougang's dead-eye over the deadball Zulfahmi Arifin proved the difference as the Cheetahs romped to a 4-1 win over Geylang International at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Saturday (April 20) to climb up to second in the nine-team Singapore Premier League (SPL).
The Hougang skipper provided assists for Jordan Vestering (7th minute) and Afiq Yunos (67th), from a corner kick and free kick respectively, with Amir Zalani (55th) and Fazrul Nawaz (83rd) scoring the home side's other goals.
A header by Geylang's Dutch midfielder Barry Maguire in the 49th minute had given the Eagles hope for a fightback but proved mere consolation.
Geylang coach Noor Ali said the difference in quality between the two sides - half of Hougang's 18-man matchday squad have earned Singapore caps, compared to only four from Geylang's - was telling.
"We had our chances, but at the end of the day quality is what counts," said the 43-year-old coach.
"They don't pay Zulfahmi (well) for no reason, and his delivery of the ball was something we found very hard to contain."
Zulfahmi, 27, recently scored his first international goal for Singapore, curling home a fine free kick from 25 metres in the 1-1 draw with Oman on March 23.
Aside from his pin-point deliveries at Jalan Besar on Saturday, Zulfahmi also provided a calming influence to the Hougang backline, playing in the centre of a five-man defence, before moving into a midfield role in the second half.

Hougang coach Clement Teo, however, felt his skipper did not play to his best.
"I've known Zul since he was 16 and this boy has got tremendous talent," said the coach.
"But, as far as I am concerned, there were phases of the game where he should have done better."
Despite seeing his team leapfrog Tampines Rovers into second place in the league for at least 24 hours - the Stags play Balestier Khalsa on Sunday - Teo believes his charges still have much room for improvement.
He said: "Credit to the players, they have shown they are able to play, and fight for each other as a team.
"But it's only the sixth game, and the team have got a lot of potential, but we need to take it one game at a time. We can't think that now we're already (second), we're doing good enough."

'Electric' Sterling has boss purring

LONDON • When Raheem Sterling grew up within the shadow of Wembley, he would ride around on his bike marvelling at the gleaming stadium, dreaming of playing there.
He even has a tattoo of him as a young boy staring up in awe at the arch. Life now imitates artwork and Wembley now marvels at him.
The 24-year-old scored not one but three goals in the 5-0 demolition of the Czech Republic on Friday - the first England player to notch a hat-trick at the national stadium since Jermain Defoe against Bulgaria in 2010.
It was the perfect exhibition of Sterling's myriad talents and gave England the ideal start in qualifying for Euro 2020.
Perhaps most encouragingly of all, is evidence that he is finally transferring his Manchester City form onto the international stage.
England manager Gareth Southgate praised the forward's "devastating" performance and the manner in which he has turned around his international career, after going three years and 27 appearances without a goal.

  • 5

  • Goals Raheem Sterling has scored in his last three games for England. He had not managed a single goal in his previous 27 appearances.

"Raheem was brilliant, electric all night," Southgate said.
"He's in a really confident moment, not only on the field but off the field he's so mature and comfortable in himself.
"So I'm delighted for him to get the reaction that he did from the crowd. We can't hide from the fact he's had difficult moments with England and he's turned that full circle.
"The goals in Spain (two goals in a Nations League win in October) were an important moment for him; you could see the release that had brought. He's hungry for those goals and I thought he was devastating tonight."
Sterling's efficiency on the pitch was so good that he had 96 per cent passing accuracy, and his three shots brought all three goals alongside a Harry Kane penalty - which he won - and a Tomas Kalas own goal.
But it was not simply his pace and persistence that opened up the Czechs time and again. It was the intelligence that defined his involvement, his awareness of opportunity and ruthlessness in exploiting chances, shredding the visitors' defence.
His latest performance was just another reminder why Southgate believes it is between Sterling or Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk to win the individual awards as the Premier League's outstanding player this season.
Not that Sterling was the only player in England's colours to excel, though.
The Three Lions finished the night with Jadon Sancho and Callum Hudson-Odoi, making his debut as a second-half substitute, with both 18-year-olds menacing their opponents from the wings.
Declan Rice, who switched allegiance from Ireland only earlier this month, also earned his first international cap in the second half.
"To finish with two young wingers was really exciting," added Southgate.
"They don't feel inhibited around the camp, so they don't feel inhibited on the pitch and you could see that by the way they played.
"I thought Jadon made a really good contribution for the first goal. Callum had an opportunity to play with the freedom he's shown all week, and I thought he displayed that."
England, following an impressive semi-final run at last year's World Cup, are indeed looking promising with this young side.
When the Mexican wave started at Wembley it was not one of those occasions when it felt as if the crowd were trying to make their own entertainment.
They were well and truly entertained, and will be looking for more of the same kind of performance from Sterling and Co when England travel to Montenegro for their second qualifier tomorrow.

Football: You can reach 1,000 goals, Pele tells French star Kylian Mbappe

Football: You can reach 1,000 goals, Pele tells French star Kylian Mbappe

PARIS (AFP) - Football legend Pele told Kylian Mbappe on Tuesday (April 2) that he believes the French World Cup winner can emulate his own achievement of scoring 1,000 career goals.
The 78-year-old Brazilian claims to have netted over 1,000 goals in his career, while Mbappe has so far managed 103 in total, with 92 of those coming at the top level.
"It's possible, I scored exactly 1,025, so 1,000 goals is possible for him," Pele told AFP in Paris, where he met Mbappe at a sponsor event for Hublot watches.
Mbappe, who last year became only the second teenager to score in a World Cup final after Pele in France's 4-2 victory over Croatia, played down Pele's comments.
"I think that even if we count the goals on inter-city pitches and goals on the PlayStation, I won't be able to reach the 1,000-goal mark," said the 20-year-old Paris St Germain forward.
"We will try to get as close as we can, but I think I'll be a long way off it at the end of my career."
Mbappe has scored 32 goals in all competitions for PSG this season, including 27 from only 24 Ligue 1 appearances.
Pele was only 21 when he won his second World Cup in 1962, adding a third eight years later.
"There's only one 'King' and he's there," said Mbappe. "I'm just Kylian, I'm trying to do my best to help my team and my national side.
"The comparisons are flattering but I know very well that I will never do what he did."
It was not the first time that Mbappe has had to temper comparisons with Pele, after a rush to crown him a future footballing great during the World Cup in Russia, where he scored four goals in total.
But the former Monaco striker insists that he is not focused on becoming the best player of modern times.
"When Pele was playing, he didn't think he wanted to be the best player in history, he wanted to have fun, help his country and his club, which he did," he said.
"What I want is to help PSG, the France team and afterwards it will be other people who tell you that you are the best.
"Everyone says that he is the best, but if you are (the best), there's no need to say it. It's not a goal for me."
Pele spent the majority of his career at Santos in his home country, bar a spell in the United States with the New York Cosmos shortly before his retirement.
He told Mbappe, who has been repeatedly linked with a move away from PSG, that the key to smashing goalscoring records is playing in the very best teams.
"People tend to say that goals are the most important thing - I thank God for having scored so many in my career - but we must know that we need to be well-supported, you can't score on your own, you need good teammates, that's very important."
Mbappe and his Paris teammates have only the French Cup left to fight for this season, with the Ligue 1 title all but secured and their Champions League campaign over after a humiliating defeat by Manchester United.

Football: Man City look like world's best side but Liverpool will fight till the end, Klopp stresses

(REUTERS) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said English Premier League title rivals Manchester City are currently the best team in the world but there is no guarantee Pep Guardiola's side will finish the season with an unprecedented quadruple.
With the League Cup already in the bag, City are a point clear of Liverpool at the top of the league, and have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League and the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
"City look like the best team in the world, that's how it is," Klopp told reporters.
"Barcelona struggled a little bit (against Villarreal on Tuesday) but still did the job. Juve look pretty impressive in Italy but you don't exactly know how it will be in the Champions League if Cristiano Ronaldo cannot do it.
"And you think, OK, City look a bit more stable than all of them. But that doesn't mean they will win all their games."
While the focus has been on City seeking a clean sweep of silverware, the prospect of Liverpool themselves completing a Premier League and Champions League double seems to have slipped under the radar.
Klopp, however, does not expect his players to take their foot off the gas until the end of the campaign.

"I'm just interested in our games and we cannot do more than win our games," the German added.
"We knew pretty quick Southampton was the next challenge, then Porto, then Chelsea, then Porto again. There is a lot to come and the only thing I can say is that we try everything to be really ready for that fight."
Liverpool visit Southampton in the league later on Friday (April 5) before City meet Brighton in the FA Cup semi-finals on Saturday.

Aubameyang sets sights on Europa title

LONDON • Arsenal were able to count on a team of superheroes as they overturned a two-goal deficit to reach the quarter-finals of the Europa League, but their next opponents are unlikely to allow them the same luxury of drawing on their powers of recovery.
They were yesterday paired with Napoli in the pick of the ties following the draw, with Unai Emery's team playing at the Emirates in the first leg on April 11 before the return leg in Italy a week later.
The winners of that tie will go on to a semi-final clash against the victors of the all-Spanish meeting between LaLiga teams Valencia and Villarreal. Peter Lim-owned Valencia were on their way out before Goncalo Guedes struck a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser against Krasnodar on Thursday to progress 3-2 on aggregate.
Chelsea, Europa League winners in 2013, will fancy their chances of advancing against Czech side Slavia Prague after smashing Dynamo Kiev 5-0 for an 8-0 aggregate win, while Eintracht Frankfurt will next take on Portuguese outfit Benfica.
While Emery's men have arguably a harder path to the May 29 final in Baku, with Napoli currently second in Serie A, the Spaniard feels pressure brings out the best in his team as "the difficult moments give us our best performance".
Speaking after the 3-0 second-leg win over Rennes during which Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang celebrated his brace with a mask from the film Black Panther, he said: "I'm excited (about) this competition.
"It's exciting not only for the possibility to go to the Champions League, but also because it's a title.
"Today, Inter (Milan), Sevilla are out, a big surprise. The last teams, they're all very important, and it's going to be very difficult. We're going to think the same before every match. The next match is the most important for us."
After Arsenal became only the second Europa League side to come back from 3-1 down after Fulham in 2010, Aubameyang tweeted his delight at the draw, claiming he was looking forward to meeting his friends, Napoli defenders Kevin Malcuit and Faouzi Ghoulam.
He also told reporters the mask "represented him", adding: "In Gabon, we call the national team the Panthers."

More racial abuse cases heighten calls for action
LONDON • Football authorities are facing more scrutiny over their handling of fans' racial abuse of players after three English clubs reported alleged incidents on Saturday and Crystal Palace's Wilfried Zaha called out an online message branding him "a diving monkey".
The latest incidents came two days after Tottenham defender Danny Rose revealed he "cannot wait to see the back of football" because of the lack of action taken against racial abuse, while Raheem Sterling urged those in charge to take a "proper stance".
Among the incidents on Saturday, Brentford confirmed a season-ticket holder was arrested at Griffin Park after confronting Derby's Duane Holmes, who was in the dugout, having been substituted during their 3-3 draw.
Derby manager Frank Lampard said: "A fan came up to him and abused him… It was very clearly reported by the players and the people around."
In response, Brentford said they "utterly condemn discrimination" and would press for "the most severe sanctions".
Wigan issued a statement after their winger Nathan Byrne posted an image of a grossly offensive direct message he received on Twitter after their 2-2 draw with Bristol City at Ashton Gate, with the Lactics saying they reported the incident to the police as a hate crime.
Northampton, meanwhile, said their players had been racially abused while walking through Nottingham before their League Two draw with Notts County.
Zaha, who was fouled in the penalty area during Palace's 1-0 win at Newcastle, retweeted the abusive message he had received, tagging it "LOL".
He then responded to the abuse by writing on Instagram: "For all the people being racist and wishing death on my family, I wish you and your families the best too… my life is still very good despite your hate."
Anti-racism group Kick It Out released a statement condemning the latest incidents, tweeting: "Another week, another group of players racially abused… We won't stop highlighting this disgraceful behaviour while it remains deeply ingrained within football.
"We'll be liaising with the relevant authorities and offering support to clubs and players involved."

Football: Newport 'keeper Joe Day skips FA Cup celebrations after stunning Boro as wife goes into labour

(REUTERS) - As tiny Welsh side Newport County celebrated a remarkable FA Cup triumph over Middlesbrough at Rodney Parade on Tuesday (Feb 5), goalkeeper Joe Day sprinted down the tunnel to be with his wife who had gone into labour during the match.
Day, who had turned his phone off during the shock 2-0 fourth-round victory, asked manager Michael Flynn's permission to leave on learning the news and rushed to the hospital to welcome his twin girls into the world.
"'Please can I leave gaffer?' He asked me that straight after the game finished," Flynn said. "I said: 'Of course you can, do you need a lift?'
"As soon as the whistle went, he sprinted off. If they come tonight, what a special birthday they will have."
Fourth-tier Newport's win over the Championship high-fliers set up a cracking fifth-round home clash with Premier League champions Manchester City on Feb 16.
Padraig Amond, scorer of Newport's second goal, told BBC Radio Wales that everything had gone smoothly.
"They've had two healthy baby girls so congratulations to Joe and his partner Lizzie and the two little girls as well," he said. "It's brilliant."

Football: Search for missing Cardiff City's Emiliano Sala resumes in English Channel

LONDON (REUTERS) - The search for Cardiff City's new football star, Emiliano Sala, resumed on Wednesday (Jan 23) 36 hours after the light aircraft he was flying on disappeared in the English Channel.
Sala was flying from the French city of Nantes to Cardiff for his club debut when the plane lost radar contact off the English Channel island of Guernsey late on Monday.
"We have resumed searching," Guernsey police said.
"Two planes are taking off and will search a targeted area we believe has the highest likelihood of finding anything, based on review of the tides and weather since it went missing."
Rescue aircraft and boats had searched more than 1,000 square miles (2,590 square km) of sea for the single-engine Piper Malibu by midday on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old Argentine-born forward joined struggling Cardiff City from FC Nantes last week for a club record fee of about €17 million (S$26.3 million), after scoring 12 goals for the French club this season.
In a voice message left by Sala, published by Argentinian newspaper Clarin, he said that it seemed as though the plane was "about to crash".

The plane had been cruising at 5,000 feet (1,525 m) when the pilot requested to descend to a lower altitude on passing Guernsey. It lost radar contact at 2,300 feet (700 m), the police said.
Police said that they had seen a number of floating objects in the water on Tuesday, but had been unable to determine whether they were from the missing aircraft.
The police said they had found no signs of those on board, and that if the aircraft landed on water, the chances of survival were slim.

Klopp not falling for title talk trap

Klopp not falling for title talk trap

LONDON • Jurgen Klopp refused to get carried away with the growing expectation that Liverpool can win the league title for the first time in 29 years, saying his players must stay focused after they thrashed Arsenal 5-1 on Saturday.
Roberto Firmino's hat-trick - the first by a Liverpool player against the Gunners since Peter Crouch in 2007 - as well as a goal apiece by Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane ensured Liverpool's front three all scored in the same league game for the first time this season.
The win gave Liverpool a nine-point advantage over Tottenham Hotspur who surprisingly threw away an early lead to lose 3-1 to Wolves at Wembley earlier on Saturday.
Tired of media questions about the title race, Klopp said he was wary of falling into the trap of talking up his team's chances with 18 games of the 38-match campaign remaining, especially with a potentially title-defining clash away at Manchester City on Thursday.
"I would really love that we switch and you all come here and I go there," the Liverpool boss told reporters when asked about their nine-point cushion.
"I'm not the smartest person in the world, but I'm really not an idiot - not always, at least.
"It's absolutely not important how many points you are ahead in December, even at the end of December... If we drop three points, the next headline will be, 'Are they nervous?'."
He insisted knowing the Tottenham result before they kicked off at Anfield made no difference.
"Before the game, we heard because it was on all the screens about the result of Tottenham. Did you think the party started already?" he added.
"I didn't see a smile on any faces in the dressing room. Just see it (the result) and then go on.
"In the moment, it feels like a marathon what we are running. Before the marathon: the weather is brilliant, new trainers, new shirt, new everything.
"The people say, 'You will win today' but first I have to run. The people all around us are buzzing but we have to run. That's what we try (to do) as good as possible."
Liverpool responded brilliantly to conceding only their eighth league goal of the season when Ainsley Maitland-Niles opened the scoring in the 11th minute.
They scored four goals in just over half an hour through Firmino (two), Mane and a Salah penalty before Firmino completed his hat-trick with another spot-kick after the break.
"Mo Salah gave the penalty to Bobby and I almost cried because we all know how much Mo wants to score goals. It was really nice," said Klopp.
Asked to reflect on 2018, which has seen Liverpool finish as Champions League runners-up and now go unbeaten in 20 league matches, Klopp said it was "not too bad".
"The boys have made a big step, but it's important to show it's a positive process. In 2018, I have nothing to moan about," he added.
Arsenal boss Unai Emery admitted that the Gunners endured a tough time at Anfield.
Asked what he thought of the awarding of the two spot-kicks, the Spaniard said: "It wouldn't change the score, Liverpool deservedly won."
