Football: Sarri will rely on Hazard

Football: Sarri will rely on Hazard

LONDON • Given the travails of Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata - the misfiring duo have scored only one and five Premier League goals respectively this season - it is no wonder Maurizio Sarri is hoping Eden Hazard can continue to flourish in the "false nine" position.
The Belgium international fired Chelsea into the League Cup semi-finals on Wednesday after replacing the ineffective Giroud and he also excelled in that role in their last league game at Brighton.
With the 27-year-old arguably having his best season in a Blues shirt - he has been involved in 18 league goals in 17 games, two more than the whole of last term - Hazard is again expected to lead the attack against Leicester today.
Despite his complaints when asked to operate there under former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, Sarri believes his star forward is so versatile that there "isn't a best position" for him.
At his pre-match press conference yesterday, he said: "Hazard is a wonderful player with a very high level of imagination. He needs to be let free on the pitch. So there isn't a 'right' position for him."
The Italian, however, shot down speculation that he was looking to bring in more attacking reinforcements to Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window.
The 59-year-old refused to comment on rumours that he wanted on-loan AC Milan striker Gonzalo Higuain, his former player at Napoli, and batted away a question that linked Bournemouth's Callum Wilson with a move next month.

Hinting Hazard would continue to plough a lone furrow up front, he said: "I don't know about Wilson. (Cherries boss) Eddie (Howe) is a friend and I want to see him happy.
"We started two matches (with) Hazard as a striker. I wanted to see the solution to work in other situations so I need two or three matches to see it.
"I explained the point of view to Giroud, then we will see. We played a good match against (Manchester) City and, against Brighton, we were dangerous for 60 minutes.
"Then it was a different match, more physical. We lowered the level of application. We need to avoid this (in the Foxes game) as we have to think to kill the match."
Chelsea have several former Leicester players in their ranks, including N'Golo Kante, but one player who will likely be denied a reunion with his former club is Danny Drinkwater.
The England midfielder has yet to play this season, and Sarri all but declared his availability, adding that "his problem is my football".
Despite being eight points off the top, the Chelsea boss played down suggestions his players were still in the hunt, insisting he had never seen them as "contenders" as Liverpool and City were "two teams a step ahead of us".
Sarri also expressed his sympathy at Mourinho's sacking as Manchester United boss in midweek.
While his predecessor Conte had a much-publicised frosty relationship, Sarri enjoyed a far more amiable bond with the Portuguese.
Declaring his "like for him as a coach and person", he expressed his desire to see Mourinho back "on a bench as soon as possible" before joking as long it was "not here (at Chelsea)".

Football: Mauricio Pochettino plans to ruin old pal Pep Guardiola's Champions League bid

Football: Mauricio Pochettino plans to ruin old pal Pep Guardiola's Champions League bid

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Pep Guardiola's bid to win the Champions League for the first time since 2011 will come under threat from his old friend Mauricio Pochettino when Manchester City face Tottenham in the quarter-final second leg later on Wednesday (April 17).
Guardiola's side must overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit at the Etihad Stadium to avoid extending their manager's frustrating Champions League run.
Guardiola is rightly regarded as the best manager of his generation after trophy-laden spells with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and now City.
But despite having access to vast financial backing at all three clubs and coaching some of the world's greatest players, Guardiola has only got his hands on the Champions League trophy twice in his 11-year managerial career.
The Spaniard won it with Barcelona in 2009 and 2011, while also earning a winners' medal as a Barca player in 1992.
Some critics see that as a meagre return and the only flaw on Guardiola's CV, placing more pressure on the City manager to lead the English champions to their first ever Champions League success this term.
Aware of the harsh prism through which his European record is viewed, Guardiola went on the defensive when asked on Tuesday if he had extra motivation to win the competition again.
"The Champions League is tough. We fail all the time. Sorry guys, I'm a failure!" he said in an outburst laced with sarcasm.
"Not winning the Champions League in Bayern Munich was a big failure. What can I say?
"Do I have to win it? No. The chairman said I have to win the Champions League three times in a row!
"I didn't come here to win the Champions League honestly. I came here to play the way we played the last 20 months.
"The Premier League is the most important title, to be there every three days competing."
Guardiola's mood throughout a rather tetchy press conference ahead of the Tottenham showdown hinted at the strain he is feeling as City chase an unprecedented quadruple.
They have already won the League Cup, reached the FA Cup final and sit two points behind Liverpool in the Premier League with a game in hand.
Yet City's history bid could evaporate in the space of seven days if they lose to Tottenham and then fail to take maximum points from Premier League matches against Spurs and Manchester United.
"Definitely. If we don't win these games we will be out of two competitions. I've had this feeling for weeks," Guardiola said.
City's chances of advancing to their first Champions League semi-final in Guardiola's three-year reign have been boosted by the ankle injury that has ruled out Tottenham striker Harry Kane, while midfielder Dele Alli faces a late test on his fractured hand.
But Tottenham boss Pochettino insists his team still have a puncher's chance of holding onto the advantage given to them by Son Heung-min's first-leg winner.
"It is difficult when Manchester City plays a final like they will in this game," he said.
"For us to beat them in the first leg was an amazing result, but the tie is still open.
"What we have is the belief. We are going to fight and hope for a very good performance. You need a bit of luck in important moments in the game."
It is a tie with special meaning for Pochettino and Guardiola after they and several of their backroom staffs became friends during their time managing Espanyol and Barcelona respectively.
"The challenge is Guardiola is maybe the best manager in the world," Pochettino said.
"At the same time it is nice to see them. We met in Spain when we played and managed. We have friends in their coaching staff.
"I think he won 25 trophies. He is the most successful manager in the last 10 years for sure. For me, to win a title with Tottenham is a massive dream."

Bayern eye Chelsea teen
LONDON • While the neutral observer may be wondering what all the fuss is about over Callum Hudson-Odoi, who has yet to start in the Premier League, Bayern Munich believe he can be their equivalent of Jadon Sancho.
The Borussia Dortmund winger opted to leave Manchester City for Germany in August 2017 in search of more playing time, and the England international has not looked back since, becoming one of the hottest prospects in European football.
The six-time defending Bundesliga champions also clearly feel Hudson-Odoi has what it takes to follow in Sancho's footsteps, which is why the English winger has been the subject of four separate bids since last month - the latest being £35 million (S$60.2 million), catapulting the relatively unknown 18-year-old into the limelight.
But Chelsea have been incensed at the lengths Bayern are going to court their academy product, who has been handed successive starts in their last two games against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham for the first time in his career.
While the club are still hoping a run in the first team, which could continue today in the league against Newcastle at Stamford Bridge, might persuade him to stay, it appears his head has been turned.
According to Sky Sports, Hudson-Odoi wants to leave the club and, with only 18 months left on his deal, he holds all the cards.
With his contract situation leaving Chelsea in a bind, Blues boss Maurizio Sarri directed his ire at the Bavarian giants at his press conference yesterday, claiming Bayern "did not respect our club" after sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said in midweek Hudson-Odoi was a player they "would definitely like to have".

GETTING BETTER
He is working very well at the moment, so I am happy with the player.
MAURIZIO SARRI, Chelsea manager, rates the 18-year-old winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, who is also wanted by German champions Bayern Munich.

He blasted: "It's not professional because they are talking about a player under contract with Chelsea. I am very, very happy with the player because he is improving a lot in the defensive phase.
"Now he needs to improve in some movements without the ball. He is working very well at the moment, so I am happy with the player and I would like to have him in the future."
The Italian revealed he had recommended to the club hierarchy that two players be signed in the January transfer window, but declined to give any names or state their positions. "I spoke with the club and the club know very well my opinion," he said.
He also shot down speculation over Willian's future, despite British media reports linking the "very important" Brazil forward with Barcelona, insisting "it's impossible to lose him in January".
However, Sarri hinted that misfiring £60 million club-record signing Alvaro Morata could leave on loan, but reiterated it would only happen if there was a like-for-like "replacement" for the striker, who has scored just five league goals in 16 games this term.

Football: Super-sub Gray sends Watford into FA Cup semis

LONDON (AFP) - Andre Gray came off the bench to fire Watford into the FA Cup semi-finals with the late winner in their 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday (March 16).
Javi Gracia's side took the lead through Etienne Capoue's first half strike before Michy Batshuayi equalised for Palace after the interval.
That was the signal for Gracia to turn to Gray, who maintained his reputation as Watford's super-sub by grabbing the goal that avenged the Hornets' 2016 FA Cup semi-final defeat against Palace.
The former Burnley striker has now scored the winner as a substitute three times in recent weeks, having also netted Watford's decisive goal against Everton and Leicester.
Gray's latest heroics moved Watford closer to finally returning to the FA Cup final 35 years after they lost to Everton in their only other appearance.
"Obviously every player is disappointed if they don't start. There's two ways of going about it, you either sit there and sulk or you get on with it," Gray said.
"I've been on the bench quite a lot this season so I've got my mind round it now. I just have to come on and make a difference."
Gracia added: "When Andre Gray is on the pitch he is scoring a lot of important goals for us.
"To be able to enjoy a semi final at Wembley will be amazing."
Watford had won both Premier League meetings with Palace this season and Gracia's team went close early on when Gerard Deulofeu's strike drew a good stop from Vicente Guaita.

FATAL CONSEQUENCES

Despite that save, Guaita looked nervous on a windy afternoon and the Spanish keeper made a hash of dealing with a Watford corner before Palace managed to clear.
It was a mistake he repeated with fatal consequences as Watford took the lead in the 27th minute.
Flapping at a Jose Holebas corner, Guaita's weak punch failed to clear the danger and when the ball was diverted back to Capoue, the French midfielder slotted into the empty net from close-range.
Watford threatened a second goal when Deulofeu unleashed a rising shot moments later, but this time Guaita was up to the task.
Palace had laboured without Ivory Coast forward Wilfried Zaha, absent due to a calf strain, but they were more vibrant after the break and Heurelho Gomes had to keep out Max Meyer's diving header before Batshuayi fired just wide.
The visitors' pressure was rewarded in the 62nd minute when Gomes a risky pass to Adrian Mariappa.
Mariappa was far too slow to clear and on-loan Chelsea striker Batshuayi stole possession, advancing into the penalty area to drill a cool finish past Gomes.
Gracia responded by sending on Gray in the 77th minute and it proved an inspired move as he won it for Watford just two minutes after his introduction.
Roberto Pereyra was the catalyst with an incisive burst from midfield and the Argentine's perfectly-placed pass picked out Gray, who timed his run to poke a volley past Guaita from eight yards.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka should have forced extra-time when the ball fell to him after a Gomes mistake in stoppage-time, but the Palace defender blasted just wide.

Football: My players must want the ball, says new Lions coach Tatsuma Yoshida

Football: My players must want the ball, says new Lions coach Tatsuma Yoshida

SINGAPORE - He envisions a pacy and attacking brand of football for the Lions, and new national coach Tatsuma Yoshida was quick to emphasise this philosophy to his players during his first training session on Monday (June 3).
The workout at the Jalan Besar Stadium consisted of a keep-ball rondo exercise followed by four-versus-two or six-versus-two passing and movement drills. He later divided the squad into two teams for a friendly game to work on tactical positioning.
At his unveiling last Thursday, the 44-year-old Japanese had admitted his English is limited, but he still managed to get his point across to his team, routinely shouting instructions like "faster", "together", and "take your position".
Yoshida, who was appointed on a two-year deal and replaces V. Sundram Moorthy, later told The Straits Times: "Today is okay, but I want more. The two objectives for today was to see the players' conditions and introduce some basic tactical principles such as attacking with width and keeping our defensive shape.
"I'm happy with the effort and hard work... but we have to improve a lot and the concentration needs to increase. I know it is the fasting month, so I will increase the intensity after Hari Raya.
"The quality is not too bad, but not very good. Some players have better technique, while some have not enough but make up for it with energy."
Despite limping due to a heel injury he sustained in Japan several weeks ago, Yoshida - with a constant smile - moved around the artificial turf and demonstrated what he expected from the drills.

He was accompanied by Albirex Niigata Under-15s coach Ryo Ishibashi, serving as a translator, while assistant coach Nazri Nasir also bellowed instructions in Malay.
Yoshida said: "Football is all about coordinating your physical abilities with your thoughts, and I wanted the players' passing to be rhythmical.
"I want the players to be more aggressive in attack and in retrieving possession after losing the ball. If we want to be a ball-playing team, we need to have confidence first, the players must want the ball."
During the informal game, he was seen pulling winger Gabriel Quak aside to give more instructions. After training, Yoshida was also giving forward Adam Swandi pointers.
Quak said: "Despite his basic English, it was a good first training session in which he let the team know more about the style he wants.
"We focused more on passing in the small-group drills and practised the movements he wants us to replicate during games.
"During the two-sided game, he told me to hug the line. I think it's similar to Japan's style of stretching the opponents using width. The transition from defence to attack, and from attack to defence, is also important to him, and we can begin to see his attention to such details.
"At least to me, it seems like he does not favour the slow and patient build-up play and prefers us to play with more pace. He also doesn't want the long balls, unless we have managed to get our opponents to lose their shape."
The Republic face Solomon Islands and Myanmar in the upcoming friendlies on Saturday (June 8) and next Tuesday (June 11) respectively.
Besides the tactical fine-tuning, Yoshida also showed his human touch when he concluded the session under the scheduled two hours as most of his players are fasting.
Skipper Hariss Harun appreciated the gesture and said: "It is nice of him to try and understand our culture. We can tell he is trying his best to communicate with us in English, and with the translator, we had no big issues.
"As for the kind of football he wants of us - being organised and compact in defence, winning possession quickly after we lose it, and fast-paced attack - we need to be ready and work really hard because the faster we can adapt, the better it will be for the team."

Jose Mourinho has the mother of all striking headaches that could force him into playing Marouane Fellaini up front against Chelsea. Mourinho is without no fewer than four of his first choice forwards with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wayne Rooney, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial all missing for Manchester United's trip to Stamford Bridge.

Football: Offside call leaves Burnley to settle for draw at Watford

LONDON (REUTERS) - Lowly Burnley made it four games unbeaten in the Premier League with a 0-0 draw at seventh-placed Watford on Saturday (Jan 19).
But the Clarets were left frustrated after a stoppage-time effort by striker Chris Wood was deemed narrowly offside.
Watford came out of the blocks strongest and Gerard Deulofeu twice went close early on, with one effort superbly saved by Tom Heaton before James Tarkowski cleared a shot off the line.
Heaton, who has been in fine form since replacing Joe Hart in goal earlier this month, was at his very best to deny Troy Deeney just before the break but the momentum gradually moved to the visitors.
Burnley had several chances to win but Ashley Barnes and Dwight McNeil missed great opportunities for Sean Dyche's side and Watford keeper Ben Foster was in sharp form.
The Clarets, who had won their last three games, are on 22 points in 16th place, three points above the relegation zone.
Dyche was unhappy that his team had missed out on two potentially vital points, and questioned whether the disallowed effort from New Zealander Wood was offside.
"I didn't think it was (offside) at the time, and looking back, I don't think it was now and I'd be surprised if the majority didn't think it was onside," said Dyche.
"We had three or four golden chances and it was a good performance. The energy and the edge we play with as a group is coming back but those extra two points would have been very welcome. Unfortunately a big decision has gone against us," added the former Watford manager.
Current Hornets boss Javi Gracia declined to comment on the offside decision but praised both goalkeepers for their displays.
"I think today it wasn't our best game but it was positive to get a point. We tried to win the game and were looking for different options to attack," said the Spaniard.
"We created chances with Deulofeu at the beginning of the game, and we created two more in the first half but I think the goalkeepers were everywhere today," he said.
