De Gea set to get record pay deal

De Gea set to get record pay deal
LONDON • Manchester United are prepared to give David de Gea the largest basic pay package in English football history and are increasingly confident he will sign a long-term contract extension with the Premier League club.
While leading the search to appoint a new permanent manager and director of football, United's executive chairman Ed Woodward also regards tying de Gea down as a priority and is pressing ahead with attempts to conclude a deal.
Reports that de Gea is demanding £350,000 (S$612,000) a week to stay, only to be rebuffed, have raised eyebrows at Old Trafford, given that United would be likely to accept a wage at around that mark in recognition of the Spain No. 1's importance on the pitch.
It is thought United would consider a new five-year contract guaranteeing in excess of £90 million - exceeding the totals guaranteed in the contracts of other top earners such as Arsenal's Mesut Ozil, and United teammates Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba.
The Red Devils would see such rewards as appropriate for a goalkeeper who can claim to be the best in the world in his position and has been the club's Player of the Year in four of his past five seasons.
The signs are that de Gea wants to extend his eight-year stay at United and there is a feeling that only unrealistic agent demands would threaten the deal.
Woodward also hopes to finalise extensions for Marcus Rashford, Ander Herrera and Juan Mata in the coming weeks.
After already agreeing new deals for Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw, Ashley Young, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Scott McTominay this season, Woodward told investors in a conference call on Thursday: "We want to finish off the final few."
Appointing a permanent successor to Jose Mourinho and a new director of football are still scheduled for the end of the season.
United, however, first need to turn their attention to on-pitch matters, starting with today's FA Cup fifth-round tie at Chelsea.
While Solskjaer's men have injury worries up front with Martial and Jesse Lingard already ruled out, Sanchez may still have to make do with a place on the bench given his woeful form.
Having scored only five goals in 37 appearances since moving from Arsenal in January last year, he expressed his concerns over "losing his spark". The Chile forward told the BBC: "I would like to have brought more joy to the club. Yes, it worries me because I believe in my abilities as a player, I want to show it."

Football: Leicester confirm appointment of Rodgers as manager

LONDON (AFP) - Leicester City appointed Brendan Rodgers as the Foxes' new manager on a three-year deal on Tuesday (Feb 26) as Neil Lennon returned to Celtic until the end of the season as Rodgers' successor.
Former Liverpool manager Rodgers won seven domestic trophies in nearly three seasons in charge of the Glasgow giants and leaves the Hoops eight points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
"Brendan, 46, has signed a deal with the Foxes to June 2022 and will be at King Power Stadium for Tuesday night's Premier League visit of Brighton and Hove Albion," Leicester said in a statement.
"He will take charge of the squad for the first time ahead of Sunday's trip to Watford."
Leicester sacked Claude Puel on Sunday after a 4-1 defeat by Crystal Palace left the 2015/16 Premier League champions languishing in 12th.
"At Leicester City, the foundations are in place for us to grow and achieve many things," said Rodgers.
"Hopefully, with my experiences and the talent of the players in our squad we can be successful together.
"I'm very privileged and honoured to be here as Leicester City manager and I'll give my life to make the supporters proud of their club."

Rodgers' departure with just three months of the season to go is a huge blow to Celtic, who moved quickly to reappoint a club legend in Lennon.
"I have given everything to Celtic as a player and manager already in my career and I am ready to do the same again," said Lennon.
"I will be doing all I can to continue the great work that has gone on in recent years."
The Northern Irishman won three league titles in four years during his first spell in charge between 2010 and 2014 and led Celtic to the last 16 of the Champions League after famously beating Barcelona in 2012.
"Neil has already enjoyed a hugely successful spell as manager of Celtic and, of course, served the club with distinction as player and captain over so many years," said Celtic in a statement.
"Neil will take up his role immediately and will be in charge of the team for the trip to Tynecastle tomorrow (Wednesday) against Heart of Midlothian."

CELTIC 'DISAPPOINTED' TO SEE RODGERS LEAVE

Rodgers has rebuilt his reputation in Scotland after being sacked by Liverpool in 2015, just a year after nearly delivering a long-awaited Premier League title.
He joined Celtic in 2016 and has won every domestic trophy on offer since, lifting two trebles of Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup and League Cup, as well as this season's League Cup.
However, not even the lure of a third treble or breaking the Scottish record by winning 10 league titles in a row was enough for Rodgers to reject the riches and prestige of a return to the Premier League.
"Brendan is a football manager of the highest quality and we are very disappointed to see him leave the club," said Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell in a statement.
"This is an opportunity he wished to pursue and that is something we have to respect.
"He gave the club so much and has created so many wonderful memories for the club and our supporters. His achievements are historic."
Despite his success in Scotland, Rodgers's reign will also be remembered for a lack of progress in European football.
His first match in charge of 'The Bhoys' was a humiliating 1-0 loss to Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar in the first leg of a Champions League qualifier.
Celtic did make it to the group stage of the Champions League in his first two seasons in charge, but suffered club-record defeats in a 7-0 thrashing away to Barcelona and 5-0 at home to Paris Saint-Germain.
Defeat by Valencia last week saw the Hoops eliminated in the last 32 of the Europa League for a second straight season.

Football: Ex-Uefa boss Johansson, father of Champions League, dies at 89; Infantino re-elected Fifa chief

STOCKHOLM (REUTERS) - Lennart Johansson, a Swede who presided over European football for 17 years as its new Champions League turned into a global commercial juggernaut, has died after a short illness aged 89, Sweden's football association said on Wednesday (June 5).
The president of European football governing body Uefa from 1990 to 2007 was a driving force behind the formation of the Champions League, giving the continent's top club competition a new identity, a catchy anthem and worldwide reach.
Later the same day, former Uefa general secretary Gianni Infantino was re-elected Fifa president unopposed at the congress of world football's governing body in Paris, as he claimed to have turned the organisation from being "toxic and almost criminal" back to its core values.
His re-election was marked by a round of applause from the congress after the statutes were changed earlier in the day to no longer require a vote if there was only one candidate for the position.
The 49-year-old Swiss-Italian lawyer now has a four-year mandate to try and accomplish his grandiose plans for football which were partly frustrated in his first term.
He has been in charge of Fifa since February 2016, after succeeding Sepp Blatter in the wake of a damaging corruption scandal that Infantino claimed the body had now shaken off.
Johansson's reign at Uefa had seen huge revenue streams flow into the continent's big clubs, turning Manchester United, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and others into multi-billion dollar enterprises, and their players into global megastars.
"World football will be always be grateful to him for all he has achieved for the beautiful game," Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin said in a statement.
The Swedish FA said Swedish football was in mourning.
Johansson took over the top job in European football at a turbulent time when money from television coverage was flooding into the sport and players gained complete freedom to move between countries and clubs in Europe.
"It was not a given that Uefa would be successful in meeting all these dramatic changes," the Swedish FA said.
"The Champions League became an enormous success, but Lennart Johansson's other major achievement was finding a fragile balance between the big clubs' demands and the needs of the broader football family."
Johansson ran against Blatter to head football's world governing body Fifa in an acrimonious vote in 1998 but lost. The Swiss, who led Fifa for 17 years, is now serving a six-year ban from football for unethical conduct.
The men remained rivals. The Swedish FA quoted Johansson as saying: "It is my 20-year fight with Blatter that people like."
Blatter's successor, Infantino, who worked earlier in his career under Johansson at Uefa, called the Swede "a friend and an invaluable source of wisdom and inspiration".
"Lennart has always been a role model of professionalism and, more importantly, of humanity," he said.
In 2007, Johansson stepped down as Uefa president after being beaten in an election by former France international Michel Platini. Johansson was given the title honorary president, a role which he took seriously, even attending meetings in his wheelchair.
Johansson was a lifelong supporter and honorary president of Stockholm club AIK.
In Paris, Infantino said Fifa's previously precarious financial situation was now looking rosy with the organisation's budget increased from US$5 billion to US$6.4 billion (S$8.73 billion) and reserves up from US$1 billion to US$2.75 billion.
This was despite increased spending on development projects in Fifa's 211 member associations. Fifa spent US$1.1 billion in the period 2015-18 and will increase the sum to US$1.75 billion from 2019-2022, he added.

Football: Zaha earns Palace a point at home to West Ham

LONDON (REUTERS) - Wilfried Zaha's deflected goal earned Crystal Palace a 1-1 draw at home to fellow Londoners West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday (Feb 9).
It had looked as though Mark Noble's 27th-minute penalty and Palace's profligacy in front of goal would condemn Palace to a damaging loss in their bid to climb away from the relegation dogfight.
But Zaha eventually beat West Ham's keeper Lucasz Fabianski with a shot that looped up off the boot of Issa Diop.
West Ham had been the better side before the break with Noble calmly putting them ahead from the spot after Palace keeper Vincente Guita hauled down Michail Antonio.
Palace, who began the day four points and four places above the bottom three, were much improved in the second half and created numerous chances to equalise.
Substitute Michy Batshuayi should have scored before James McArthur struck the post with only Fabianski to beat.
Zaha's persistence paid off in the 76th minute and he could have won it for Palace late on.
"I am frustrated as it was such a good performance. The first half I thought was even, but in the second half it was pretty much one-way traffic," manager Roy Hodgson said.
"We had to work hard for our equaliser, we had 17 attempts in the second half, we swarmed around the goal but we found Fabianski in very good form."
Palace actually ended the day one point closer to the drop zone.
"I'm not concerned about what is going on below us, if we keep doing our bit and with performances like today we will get points off our own backs," Hodgson said.
"We know we are good enough to stay out of it."
The draw left Palace with 27 points from 26 games, three points above the relegation zone while West Ham, in 10th place, have now gone five games without a win all competitions.
West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini thought a draw was a fair result.
"They were a bit lucky with the goal but they had other chances so the draw was the logical result," he said.
