Football: Nike 'very concerned' about rape accusation against Brazilian soccer star Neymar

SAO PAULO (REUTERS) - Nike is "very concerned" about a rape accusation against Brazilian soccer star Neymar, the world's largest sportswear maker said on Thursday (June 6), raising questions about its sponsorship of one of the sport's most famous players.
Neymar denies the allegation of rape and has said the woman was trying to extort him. The woman appeared on Brazilian TV on Wednesday and said Neymar raped her in a Paris hotel.
Mastercard Inc also cancelled a planned ad campaign featuring the star of the Brazilian national team and French club Paris Saint-Germain, Brazilian media reported on Thursday.
Mastercard said in a statement it was suspending its use of Neymar in advertising until the situation is "cleared up," according to reports in Brazil's three biggest newspapers.
The Nike statement said "we are very concerned" by the allegations "and will continue to closely monitor the situation."
A press representative for Mastercard in Brazil confirmed to Reuters the company had planned a campaign to coincide with this month's Copa America tournament, but she did not confirm a decision to suspend Neymar's role.
US press representatives for the company did not immediately reply to requests for comment.
A police report seen by Reuters showed that a woman had accused Neymar, 27, of raping her at a Paris hotel last month. Sao Paulo police are investigating the accusation.
Following media reports on the matter, Neymar posted a long video on Instagram, in which he denied the accusations, said he was a victim of extortion and shared messages he exchanged with the alleged victim, including racy photos he had received.
That led police in Rio de Janeiro to open an investigation into whether Neymar had committed a crime by posting those intimate pictures online.
A press representative for Neymar did not respond to requests for comment on the Mastercard sponsorship on a Wednesday night interview his accuser gave the SBT TV station.
"I was a victim of rape," she said in her first on-camera interview since her accusation became public.
She said that she and Neymar began exchanging private messages over social media, and that he paid for her flight to Paris and her hotel.
She said the relationship was consensual at first, but that Neymar quickly became aggressive, began to hit her and forced her to have sex with him without the use of a condom, despite her telling him repeatedly to stop.
Some of Neymar's teammates have come out in support of him, but national team coach Tite declined to pass judgment on the matter.
The Brazilian Football Confederation said on Thursday that Neymar would be dropped from the national team for the Copa America because of an ankle injury suffered in a friendly match against Qatar the night before.

Football: Dortmund drop more points at Bundesliga bottom side Nuremberg, with Bayern just three back

BERLIN (AFP) - German Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund dropped more points in the title race on Monday (Feb 18), when they were held to a goal-less draw at bottom side Nuremberg.
They are now just three points ahead of second-placed Bayern Munich, the defending champions who won 3-2 at Augsburg on Friday, with their lead slashed from nine points after drawing their last three league games.
"That was definitely too little from us, we have to pick up points again," said forward Mario Goetze.
"They didn't make it easy for us by standing deep, but we must improve."
Even without injured playmaker Marco Reus, plus defenders Lukasz Piszczek and Manuel Akanji, this was another below-par display from the league leaders.
Nuremberg were hammered 7-0 at Dortmund last September, but this was a vastly improved display from the hosts and the draw was celebrated like a win on the home bench.
It was their first game under caretaker coaches Marek Mintal and Boris Schommers after both head coach Michael Knoeller and director of sport Andreas Borneman were sacked last week.
The hosts deserve tremendous credit for battling, as their captain Hanno Behrens twice went close to giving his side a shock lead but his first-half headers went over.
Nuremberg's goalkeeper Christian Mathenia, who made four saves in the first half from Goetze alone, repeatedly thwarted the visitors' attack, but Nuremberg's winless streak in the league has now been stretched to 16 games.
"No one gave us a chance going into this game, which makes me even prouder that we picked up a point," he said.
Having crashed 3-0 at Tottenham Hotspur last week in the Champions League last-16, first leg, Lucien Favre's team again failed to score and are now winless in their last five games in all competitions.
The first half was twice halted to clear black tennis balls, thrown onto the pitch by fans in protest over the unpopular Monday night kick-off times in the Bundesliga, which will be abolished for the 2021-22 season.

Football: Liverpool back on top with 3-2 Newcastle win but Salah injured

NEWCASTLE (AFP) - Liverpool struck late through Divock Origi to move back top of the Premier League with a thrilling 3-2 win at Newcastle on Saturday (May 4) and keep their hopes of a first title for 29 years alive but suffered a major scare after injury to Mohamed Salah.
Liverpool lost Salah to a head knock that will make him a doubt for Tuesday's Champions League semi-final, second leg against Barcelona.
Newcastle had twice come from behind through Christian Atsu and Salomon Rondon to cancel out goals from Virgil van Dijk and Salah.
However, Jurgen Klopp's men piled the pressure back on Manchester City by moving two points clear of the champions thanks to Origi's header four minutes from time.
The title remains in City's hands as they have two games remaining to Liverpool's one.
However, in a recurring theme of a thrilling title race, Liverpool dug deep late on to continue asking questions of the champions.
Faced with a difficult balancing act to strike between keeping Liverpool's hopes of the title alive and preparing for Barcelona's visit to Anfield in midweek, Klopp made four changes to the side beaten 3-0 in the first leg at the Camp Nou in midweek, while Roberto Firmino again missed out due to a minor groin tear.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was one of those recalled and the England right-back was to have an eventful evening at both ends.
The visitors' showed no signs of tiredness early on as Salah twice fired off target at the back post, but Newcastle were orchestrators of their downfall when the opening goal arrived on 13 minutes.
Alexander-Arnold's corner found Van Dijk completely unmarked as Rondon slipped and the PFA's Player of the Year powered home his fifth goal of the season.
Newcastle had barely ventured over the halfway line in the first 20 minutes, but levelled with their first serious attack.
Matt Ritchie's driven cross was turned goalwards by Rondon, whose shot was saved on the line by the arm of Alexander-Arnold.
A penalty and a red card would likely have followed for the Liverpool defender had Atsu not put home the rebound.
All of a sudden Newcastle looked the more dangerous side as Ayoze Perez turned Van Dijk before smashing off the crossbar.
However, an enthralling first 28 minutes took another twist when Alexander-Arnold made the most of his reprieve to still be on the field with his second assist of the night.
His cross found Salah inside the area, but the Egyptian still had plenty to do as he cushioned a finish into the far corner on his weaker right foot to move two in front of teammate Sadio Mane and Sergio Aguero in the race for the Golden Boot.
Mane could have made it 3-1 before the break when he was denied by Martin Dubravka and Daniel Sturridge, deputising for Firmino, also blazed over a golden opportunity early in the second period to Klopp's dismay.
Moments later that miss looked to be all the more costly as Liverpool did not clear their lines from a corner and the ball broke for Rondon to fire sweetly past the helpless Alisson Becker.
Worse was to come for Liverpool as Salah was caught on the head by Dubravka as the Slovakian goalkeeper raced from his goal to punch the ball to safety.
He was stretchered off, his hands over his face to applause from both sets of supporters.
Without two thirds of their prolific frontline, Liverpool would have been forgiven for thinking their chase of City was up.
But, not for the first time this season, Origi, who scored a 96th minute winner against Everton in the Merseyside derby in December, came off the bench to score a vital late goal as he got his head to Xherdan Shaqiri's free-kick.

Spanish media call for Valverde axe

Spanish media call for Valverde axe

LONDON • It is arguably the worst European defeat in Barcelona's history and coach Ernesto Valverde is unlikely to survive what Catalan newspaper Sport headlined "The biggest farce in history" on its all-black front page.
All season, the three-goal capitulation to Serie A side Roma in the Champions League quarter-final last term hung like a dark pall.
Tuesday night was supposed to have been the opportunity to exorcise those ghosts from Italy.
Again they held a three-goal lead from the first leg at the Nou Camp. And again they imploded, this time more spectacularly, 4-0, for their heaviest defeat against an English side in all European competitions.
While the inquest into their latest European failure at Liverpool will be swift and far reaching, Valverde, who signed a new contract in February, albeit only until 2020, appears set to pay the price despite his domestic successes.
The Spanish champions are favourites to lift a second straight double with the King's Cup final against Valencia to come on May 25 but the fans have never particularly taken to his pragmatic tactics, deeming them to be a "betrayal (of) the Blaugrana DNA based on possession and control of the game".
The Roma thrashing had been a stick to beat him with, but after their collapse at Anfield, the Spanish media believe he no longer has a leg to stand on. The headlines screamed for his head yesterday as Barcelona's wait for a first Champions League final since 2015 goes on.
Sport called it "the darkest page in their history", saying: "Without doubt, Valverde holds a lot of responsibility for this disaster, because when the moment of truth arrived, he made the same mistakes as last year.
"The Champions League is too big for Valverde."
Marca, which is pro-Real Madrid, labelled the hammering as "a historic failure", while L'Esportiu declared that "the consensus is clear and is expected to bring consequences for everyone".

Number of times Lionel Messi was dispossessed.

All Barcelona's shots came through Messi, who attempted five strikes and created three.

Valverde, 55, admitted in the aftermath that "the coach has to take responsibility". He added: "I do not know how it's going to affect me. It's very painful for us, especially for our people, it's the second year they've come back like that."
Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu accepted questions would be asked of Valverde's future following the "disastrous night", alluding to "time to reflect and explain".
The players were not spared either. Like Marca, Sport gave no player more than three marks out of 10, while Ivan Rakitic and Philippe Coutinho were both rated zero by the latter.
Former Liverpool favourite Luis Suarez, who was mercilessly booed by the home fans, conceded they had no place to hide and "have to be ready for all the criticism that is going to rain down on us now".
The forward, who spent three years with the Reds from 2011 to 2014, said: "For their fourth goal, we looked like schoolboys... We are very sad. We have to do a lot of self-criticism because this is the second time that the same thing has happened to us."
Teammate Sergio Busquets, who appeared tearful, could only apologise to the travelling fans, saying: "I just want to say sorry. We didn't want this to happen again... It's hard to say anything else."

Football: Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino fumes over Borussia Dortmund's 'unfair' advantage

DORTMUND (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino has appealed to the FA and Premier League to help English clubs in the Champions League after complaining about Tottenham Hotspur's limited recuperation time before facing Borussia Dortmund.
Spurs play Dortmund away in Germany on Tuesday (March 5) in their last-16, return leg after thumping the Germans 3-0 in the first leg at Wembley.
However, Pochettino, 47, is far from happy with having a day fewer to prepare for the last-16 tie at Dortmund's Signal Iduna Park.
Spurs had a bruising 1-1 draw at home to Arsenal in Saturday's north London derby, while Dortmund lost 2-1 at Augsburg on Friday night in the Bundesliga.
"They played Friday, we played Saturday," said Spurs coach Pochettino.
"It's not fair to play with a massive disadvantage.
"We need help from the FA and the Premier League - for us it's impossible.
"We played (a Premier League game) on a Sunday before the first leg, which was on a Wednesday, when Dortmund played Saturday.
"Now we played Saturday, Dortmund played Friday.
"I don't know if the FA or the Premier League are to blame or television, who wanted us to play live Saturday or Sunday."
Pochettino pointed to the example of Stade Rennes, who postponed a French league game at the weekend to prepare for Thursday's Europa League, last-16 tie at home to Arsenal.
"Looked what happened to Rennes, they had a game cancelled, the weekend game, to help prepare to play Arsenal," said Pochettino.
"In Europe, the people are more sensitive to helping their clubs prepare for Europe, that's my point.
"I want us to have the same amount preparation time as our opponents.
"We need to change it in the future to help English clubs be stronger in the competition."
Spurs last reached the Champions League's quarter-finals in 2011 - losing 4-0 at Real Madrid and beaten 1-0 at home - and Pochettino knows this is a golden chance for Spurs.
Harry Kane is expected to lead Spurs' attack while Pochettino said Harry Winks and Eric Dier could feature after injuries.
The Argentinian repeatedly said Spurs must "forget" their heavy first-leg win at Wembley and finish the job by seeing off a Dortmund team who have one win in seven games.
Son Heung-min and Kane scored at Dortmund when Spurs won 2-1 in the group stages in 2017-18 and Pochettino wants another convincing away win.
"It's a great opportunity to go to the next round, but we need a good performance - it's going to difficult," said Pochettino.
"The 3-0 at Wembley is not important.
"We need to forget the first leg, be very professional and win the game.
"We need to start at a very good level, be aggressive, fight from the beginning, high tempo.
"We know Dortmund are a good team, they deserve to be there and they are going to start aggressive and try to push us deeper - we need to be just as aggressive."

BRIGHTON, England (REUTERS) - Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg scored the goal as Southampton withstood a second-half onslaught from Brighton & Hove Albion to secure a vital 1-0 Premier League victory on Saturday (March 30).
The win put the relegation-threatened Saints level with Brighton on 33 points, five above the drop zone.
After a cagey first half, midfielder Hojbjerg gave his side the lead in the 53rd minute, winning the ball high up the pitch and finishing a quick counter-attack by flicking Nathan Redmond's pass home with the outside of his right boot.
The goal prompted a barrage of balls into the box from the home side and Martin Montoya came closest to putting Brighton level, cutting inside and curling a powerful shot that thumped off the crossbar before bouncing to safety.
Brighton pushed Shane Duffy up front for the last few minutes but they failed to get enough quality crosses in to the big Irish defender as Southampton hung on for their third win in their last four games.
Though the performance was punctuated by plenty of errors, Hojbjerg praised the fighting spirit his team have shown.
"Our technical play can be better, (but) performing as a team was excellent. In these away games you don't get a win by being nice - you get it by being brutal and clinical," he told Sky Sports.
"It was the perfect team performance. We're one step closer (to safety), but we're not there yet."

SINGAPORE PREMIER LEAGUE
Balestier Khalsa v Brunei DPMM
Bishan Stadium, 5.30pm
The Singapore Premier League title talk had revolved around the usual suspects: defending champions Albirex Niigata, local powerhouses Tampines Rovers and Home United, as well as big spenders Hougang United.
But, midway through the first round, only the overlooked Brunei DPMM remain unbeaten even after tough games against Home (1-0), Albirex (0-0) and Tampines (2-1).
DPMM coach Adrian Pennock, facing another tough game against Balestier Khalsa at the Bishan Stadium today, told The Straits Times: "Nobody were talking about us pre-season, but there can always be surprises. Balestier are good going forward and we need to show up if we are to get a positive result.
"Momentum is so important in a league season. Albirex had a fantastic unbeaten run throughout 2018 to win the league and, hopefully, ours will continue on Saturday."
Former Belarus international Andrei Varankou has started well with three goals after being successfully integrated with the other two new imports, Australian midfielder Blake Ricciuto and English centre-back Charlie Clough, alongside DPMM's long-serving locals.
Englishman Pennock, 48, who took over on Dec 1, said: "It is important we get the right people and characters in the team. The imports we got from 30 players on trial from all over the world are excellent and the locals have just been these honest players who want to learn.
"My job was first to get them fit, strong and organised and work on team spirit and bonding."
His side are tactically flexible, able to switch between three or four at the back, and also mentally resilient. A red card saw them play with 10 men for 40 minutes against Albirex.
Balestier will be no pushovers despite missing captain and goalkeeper Zaiful Nizam, who ruptured his Achilles' tendon and will be out for about four months.
In the Singapore international's absence, coach Khidhir Khamis will have to rely on the untested duo of Zacharial Leong and Danial Faris.
He said: "Zaiful is an integral part of how we play and his absence is a big blow on and off the pitch. But we have a squad ready to take up the responsibility of leading and rallying each other until he returns."
The Tigers' tally of eight goals from five games, behind top scorers Tampines (12) and Hougang United (9), can be credited to Croatian forwards Sime Zuzul and Kristijan Krajcek with Daniel Goh, 19, impressing on the right wing.
Khidhir said:"We had a short pre-season, so we are still a work in progress. But I am pleased with the players' willingness to accept change from a soak-and-strike strategy to more expansive football. "
Yesterday, Hougang moved to third in the table with a 1-0 win over Home at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

Football: Son back as Tottenham target comeback in Ajax semi-final

AMSTERDAM (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino describes being in the last four of the Champions League as "a bonus", but Tottenham Hotspur are still hopeful of going all the way to the final as Son Heung-min returns for Wednesday's second leg against Ajax.
Spurs come to Amsterdam needing a special performance if they are to reach the final of this competition for the first time in their history after a Donny van de Beek away goal condemned them to a 1-0 defeat in London last week.
However, Pochettino's team have already made history for the club by getting this far - they last reached the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1962 before being beaten by Eusebio's Benfica.
Now they are dreaming of a first European final since Keith Burkinshaw's team beat Anderlecht on penalties to lift the UEFA Cup in 1984, before any of those set to feature on Wednesday were born.
"We are living a dream. Five years ago when we arrived it was to reduce the gap to the top four, and then to have the possibility to play in the Champions League," Pochettino said at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Tuesday (May 7).
"I think nobody would believe we would be playing in the Champions League three seasons in a row and competing at this stage."

STUMBLING

However, his side are stumbling badly towards the finish line with a depleted squad, set to finish in the top four in the Premier League mainly thanks to the failings of the teams below them.
Harry Kane is out, and Tottenham have been beaten five times in their last six games in all, nine times in their last 10 matches away from home.
The exception in that run came on their last trip to the continent, however, against Borussia Dortmund in the last 16, and now they arrive in Amsterdam with Son available after sitting out the first leg due to suspension.
Jan Vertonghen, who began his professional career in Amsterdam before joining Tottenham in 2012, is in line to return too after coming off with a head knock in the first leg.
"You wouldn't believe at the start of the season that Tottenham would be in the last week of the season with the possibility of being in the final of the Champions League and to be in the top four," Pochettino insisted. "Both are real, but this is not the moment to talk."
Spurs' status as one of the Premier League's top six clubs gives them a considerable financial advantage over Ajax, but they cannot match their opponents - four times European champions - when it comes to history.
The club of Cruyff and so many other great names are in sight of a first Champions League final since 1996 and remain in with a chance of a treble, something they last did in 1972 when the man after whom their stadium is now named was starring on the pitch.

TREBLE DREAM

Erik ten Hag's team secured the first leg at the weekend when they beat Willem II 4-0 in the Dutch Cup final, and they are top of the league in the Netherlands with two matches left.
They are aiming to carry on an incredible European run that began in the second qualifying round against Sturm Graz on July 25.
"You don't expect at the beginning of the season to be in this position. I am very proud and happy to be here during this special period," said Daley Blind, almost echoing Pochettino's own remarks.
Blind, who returned to the club from Manchester United just before the campaign began, admitted that celebrations after the Cup final were "a bit timid" due to the proximity to this match.
Ajax are now hoping they don't live to regret not scoring more than once in London.
"Our defensive organisation was excellent," pointed out Ten Hag. "In the final third we didn't play all that well but the players' mindset was to defend our 1-0 lead."
If they can finish the job on Wednesday, they will be the ones to advance to the final in Madrid on June 1.

Emery's side take on Valencia in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday night, having lost all three games without Ramsey since he was forced off in Naples.
