Football: Son's South Korea survive Bahrain scare to reach Asian Cup quarters

DUBAI (AFP) - Son Heung-min's South Korea needed an extra-time winner to beat world ranked 113th Bahrain 2-1 as they stumbled into the Asian Cup quarter-finals in unconvincing fashion on Tuesday (Jan 22).
Kim Jin-su's diving header at the end of the first extra period proved the difference as the two-time champions met unexpected resistance before winning in Dubai.
But Paulo Bento's side, runners-up in 2015 and one of the favourites for the title, survived to reach the last eight, where they will face Qatar or 2007 winners Iraq.
Tottenham star Son took a boot to the head as he weathered some robust challenges in a first half which South Korea dominated with 73 percent of possession.
Bahrain nearly stunned the Koreans with Mohamed Marhoon's stinging early shot as South Korea took time to settle into their rhythm.
But from the half-hour Son started to make his presence felt with some typically direct running which caused panic in the Bahrain defence.
South Korea broke the deadlock two minutes from half-time, when Son laid off to Lee Yong whose cross was parried by the goalkeeper to Hwang Hee-chan, who snaffled the easy chance.

South Korea threatened to run riot after the break before Bahrain hit back and it took a magnificent flying stop from Kim Seung-gyu to keep out Jamal Rashed's thumping effort.
And against all expectations, Bahrain were suddenly level with 13 minutes remaining when Mohamed Al Romaihi smashed in the rebound from Mahdi Al-Humaidan's shot.
The goal stunned South Korea, who had only conceded twice at an Asian Cup game since 2011 - the 2015 final, which they lost 2-1 to Australia after extra time.
Hwang Ui-jo nearly snatched the victory in injury time, when a defensive mix-up put him one-on-one with Sayed Shubbar Alawi, but he spooned his shot wide to set up the additional 30 minutes of play.
South Korea's first goal had been their only shot on target but they looked determined to put that right and substitute Lee Seung-woo should have done better when he was set up in the box by Son's strong run.
Bahrain goalkeeper Alawi withdrew with an apparent hamstring injury but one of the first tasks for his replacement, Abdulkarim Fardan, was to pick the ball out of the net.
Substitute Kim Jin-su found time and space to steady himself and drive home a header from Lee Yong's cross, a goal which the team celebrated by holding up the 16 shirt of injured Newcastle United midfielder Ki Sung-yueng.
Ju Se-jong also rammed a shot against the post in a positive finish for the Koreans, and while they celebrated there were tears from the Bahrainis at the final whistle.

Ui-Jo Hwang's goal separated the two sides. South Korea opened their AFC Asian Cup 2019 campaign with a battling 1-0 win over the Philippines as they looked to reach a second straight final at the

Kompany's next stop: Anderlecht as player-manager

LONDON • Vincent Kompany announced yesterday that he will leave Manchester City after 11 trophy-laden years to become player-manager of Anderlecht.
Belgian defender Kompany joined City in 2008 and made 360 appearances, winning four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups and two Community Shields.
The club captain signed off by lifting the FA Cup trophy on Saturday after City thrashed Watford 6-0 to complete a domestic treble.
"As overwhelming as it is, the time has come for me to go. And what a season to bow out," said the 33-year-old, who was in tears after scoring a dramatic long-range winner against Leicester in City's final home game of the season on May 6.
"I feel nothing but gratefulness. I am grateful to all those who supported me on a special journey, at a very special club."
Anderlecht is the Belgian club where Kompany began his professional career before joining Hamburg and he admitted he is relishing the chance to move into management.
"For the next three years, I will take up the role of player-manager of Anderlecht. Belgium's finest," he wrote on Facebook.

  • Vincent Kompany has led Manchester City to four Premier League titles.

"This may come as a surprise to you. It's the most passionate yet rational decision I've ever made.
"(Club owner) Sheikh Mansour changed my life and that of all the City fans around the world, for that I am forever grateful.
"A blue nation has arisen and challenged the established order of things, I find that awesome."
Kompany, who featured in only 17 of City's 38 league games this season because of muscle problems, also paid tribute to his teammates and manager Pep Guardiola.
"It's cliche to say it, but it's also so true: without my teammates, I would have never been here today," he said.
"So to all of you, from the 2008-2009 squad to today's domestic treble winners: I owe you guys!
"A special word also to Pep and the backroom staff: you've been superb... Thank you so much."
In September, City will hold Kompany's testimonial match, from which he will donate all profits to Manchester's homeless.
City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak told the club's official website: "There have been many important contributors to Manchester City's renaissance, but arguably none are more important than Vincent Kompany. For a decade, he has been the lifeblood, the soul, and beating heart of a supremely talented squad.
"A booming voice in the dressing room yet a quiet and measured ambassador off it, Vincent can be as proud of himself as we are of him."
Midfielder Kevin de Bruyne, Kompany's club and country teammate, tweeted: "Playing for about 10 years with this man for club and country. And what a privilege it's been.
"Big player, Big personality and big leader. Learnt a lot from you. Wishing you all the best for the future."

BARCELONA • Antoine Griezmann had been set to move to Barcelona last summer in one of football's biggest transfers of all time.
The seemingly nailed-on deal, however, failed to materialise after Atletico Madrid managed to convince the France forward that they were making progress, leading him to sign a new contract until 2023.
But, 10 months after making La Decision - a much-lampooned TV documentary about his decision to stay at the Wanda Metropolitano - media reports have indicated Griezmann "regrets" turning down Barcelona's overtures.
The Spanish champions take on Atletico in a top-of-the-table clash at the Nou Camp today, and he could have been lining up alongside Lionel Messi and a few weeks from a possible domestic double and the Champions League as well.
Instead, he will spearhead Diego Simeone's attack in the knowledge that a loss will surely sound the death knell for his side's title hopes.
The league is all Atletico, who trail Barcelona by eight points, have to play for, having already been knocked out of the King's Cup and the Champions League.

The expectation is that a disappointing term will be followed by a string of player sales in the close season.

THE MORE THE MERRIER
We're on a well-travelled path and now we have to be precise. We'd like to get a trophy, and it would be best to get all of them.
ERNESTO VALVERDE, Barcelona coach, who is aiming for glory on all three fronts.

Bayern Munich have already announced the signing of France defender Lucas Hernandez, who will move in the summer for a club record fee of €80 million (S$121.6 million).
Captain Diego Godin, defenders Filipe Luis and Jose Gimenez, goalkeeper Jan Oblak, and midfielders Thomas Partey and Saul Niguez have also been linked with exits, although Griezmann's possible departure would be the hardest to stomach.
Although the club are continuing to put up a brave front with the rumour mill in overdrive - coach Simeone has said he "cannot imagine the next season without him" - it is hard to imagine the 28-year-old putting up with another year of mediocrity.
After all, this is a player who has gone public, stating he is "sitting at the same table as (Lionel) Messi and (Cristiano) Ronaldo".
While it would be a "statement of intent" should Atletico win, it is hard to see the away team, who will already be without injured Spain striker Alvaro Morata, causing an upset, with Simeone yet to beat Barcelona in the league in his seven years in charge.
However, Ernesto Valverde does not believe his side have a mental edge going into the encounter as "Atletico are not destabilised by Griezmann being talked about".
Urging the Catalan giants to keep their focus with the treble on the horizon, the Barcelona coach said: "Historically, when Barca win the Champions League, they win LaLiga.
"The way to be in other tournaments is how you are in LaLiga. For me, the league is essential.
"All three trophies are equally close or far away. Everything depends on little things, and we still haven't won anything yet.
"We're on a well-travelled path and now we have to be precise. We'd like to get a trophy, and it would be best to get all of them."

Football: Bayern miss chance to seal title after Leipzig stumble

BERLIN (REUTERS) - Champions Bayern Munich stumbled to a goalless draw at RB Leipzig on Saturday (May 11), missing their chance to seal the Bundesliga title as Borussia Dortmund kept their hopes alive and closed to within two points with one game left.
Bayern, who needed a win to make sure of a record-extending seventh consecutive league title, are on 75 points and will now face a final day examination against Eintracht Frankfurt next week.
Dortmund, who beat Fortuna Duesseldorf 3-2, are on 73 and face Borussia Moenchengladbach next week.
Leipzig are third on 66 and have secured their Champions League spot for next season.
“We want to win this thing next week,” said Bayern’s Thomas Mueller. “We have battled back from nine points behind (late last year). We are very greedy.” The Bavarians missed several good chances with Serge Gnabry and Robert Lewandowski failing to hit the target and also had a Leon Goretzka effort in the second half ruled out after video review.
They face Leipzig again in the German Cup final on May 25.
It was an even more nervous affair at Dortmund, where goals from Christian Pulisic, Thomas Delaney and Mario Gotze eventually sealed a win for the title contenders.
The hosts suffered with a blunder from keeper Marwin Hitz that allowed Duesseldorf back into the game at 1-1 before the hosts then had to sweat it out after a Duesseldorf goal in stoppage time reduced the deficit to 3-2.
Hitz, replacing injured Roman Buerki, also brought down Dodi Lukebakio for a second-half penalty which the forward fired wide.
Hanover 96 and Nuremberg were relegated while VfB Stuttgart beat VfL Wolfsburg 3-0 to hold on to 16th place and will go into a relegation/promotion playoff with the second division’s third-placed team.

LEICESTER, England (REUTERS) - Crystal Palace piled further pressure on Leicester City manager Claude Puel on Saturday (Feb 23) with a comprehensive 4-1 Premier League win over his team, who have now gone seven games without a victory.
Two goals from Wilfried Zaha, another from Michy Batshuayi and a penalty from Luka Milivojevic inflicted a fourth consecutive league defeat on Leicester - their worst run since 2000.
But it was the manner of the performance that will have most alarmed Puel, with two goals conceded late on to set sections of the crowd booing.
By contrast, 71-year-old Roy Hodgson was in delighted mood as he officially became the oldest ever Premier League manager.
Leicester conceded the first goal for the 19th time this season when Batshuayi was hit by James McArthur's shot, the ball ricocheting past Kasper Schmeichel at great pace. It was the Belgian's first Premier League goal in 19 months.
Although Evans responded with his first goal for Leicester, after 64 minutes, Palace quickly restored their lead with a finish from close-in by Zaha, who was returning from suspension.
Milivojevic put the game beyond doubt with a spot kick after 81 minutes after Evans, making an eventful 250th appearance in the Premier League, fouled Jeffrey Schlupp.
Zaha added his second goal, and Palace's fourth, late on after mistakes by Harry Maguire and Schmeichel.
Interviewed on television immediately after the game, Zaha appeared surprised when James Tomkins was awarded the man-of-the-match award. Asked to present it, Zaha joked: "Oh wow, really? Okay."
The win put Palace six points clear of the relegation zone as they moved one place and two points behind 12th-placed Leicester.

Football: Arsenal's Ramsey signs four-year Juventus deal

MILAN (AFP) - Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has signed a four-year deal to join Juventus on a free transfer, the Italian champions said on Monday (Feb 11).
The 28-year-old Wales international will arrive in northern Italy on July 1 with his contract running until June 30, 2023.
Juventus said that the club are liable to pay 3.7 million euros (S$5.7 million) by July 10 in the absence of a transfer fee.
Ramsey began his career at Cardiff City, making his his first team debut in 2007 before arriving at Arsenal in July 2008.
Over the past decade he has played 256 Premier League games, scoring 38 top-flight goals, and winning three FA Cup and two Community Shield.
He also had two loan spells at Nottingham Forest in 2010, and back at former club, Cardiff in 2011.
"As well as being recognised as a solid Premier League player, Ramsey brings a wealth of European experience," Juventus said.
Ramsey has 58 caps for Wales, scoring 14 goals, and was a part of the Welsh side that reached the Euro 2016 semi-finals.
He becomes the third Welshman to play for Juventus following club legend John Charles and former European Golden Boot winner Ian Rush.

Europe progress spurs hope for league title: Pochettino
LONDON • Mauricio Pochettino believes Tottenham should seek inspiration from an unlikely run to the last 16 of the Champions League to pose a Premier League title challenge.
Despite the midweek exertions of drawing 1-1 away to Barcelona to progress in Europe, Spurs closed to within five points of champions Manchester City domestically, thanks to Christian Eriksen's stoppage-time winner to earn a 1-0 home victory over Burnley on Saturday.
The win kept Tottenham in third place and just three points adrift of second-placed Liverpool, who can return to the top of the table with victory over Manchester United yesterday (early this morning, Singapore time).
Pochettino knows that many believe the title is a two-horse race between City and Liverpool.
But he argued otherwise, citing his side's recovery from taking just one point from their first three Champions League group games as encouragement that anything can happen.
"We are in a very good position," said the Argentinian, who has also had to contend with persistent delays over a move to the club's new stadium, no summer signings in the transfer market and a host of injuries to members of his squad who shone at the World Cup.
"The reality is that after 17 games, we are third. That is a massive achievement for us.
"All is possible. Look what happened in the Champions League after three games. We had only one point and we believed it was possible and, in the end, we are now in the next stage.
"There are a lot of things you need to take into consideration, but the most important thing is belief and faith in the way you work and, if you give 100 per cent, all can happen."
Victory was also Pochettino's 100th in the Premier League from 168 games as Tottenham manager.
It was the sort of history that Spurs fans revel in as he beat former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to the century by 10 fewer games.
The two North London sides will meet on Wednesday in the League Cup quarter-finals, and Pochettino will need no reminding that to be really considered on a par with Wenger, he needs to win a trophy after four barren years.
The League Cup might be a good place to start.

Looking ahead from this European defeat, there is some hope. Now is the time for the club to, like Liverpool, invest more in the squad over the summer and bounce back again next year. The board must support Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham Hotspur project, or else it will collapse and he will move on and build a new one with another club.

Test events delay for Spurs' new home

LONDON • Tottenham face a further delay to the opening of their new stadium because of difficulties staging test events over Christmas.
The Premier League club must hold several events to gain a safety certificate and are preparing to welcome 6,000 fans selected by ballot for a tour of the ground on Sunday.
However, they are still struggling to fit in larger events in time to meet the preferred opening date of their league game against Manchester United on Jan 13.
Test events had been scheduled for successive Sundays on Dec 30 and Jan 6. But the first date is proving problematic because of a shortage of staff, while police resources are stretched in the build-up to the new year and the London derby between Crystal Palace and Chelsea is on the same day.
It is understood that Spurs have altered their plans. The Times has seen photographs from the club's operations room at the refurbished White Hart Lane, including a daily planner detailing the work that needs to be done and leading to the proposed opening date of Jan 13.
Although Spurs are making good progress after numerous setbacks, that date is now being revised and the inability to host United could result in the opening being delayed to the following month. Their next home league game after that is not until Jan 30 when Watford visit.
However, because that is a Wednesday night on the eve of the January transfer window deadline day, it is hardly the ideal date for such an occasion. So the opening could be further postponed.

Mauricio Pochettino's men are at home to Newcastle the following Saturday on Feb 2.
Spurs have not publicly confirmed their plans for home games beyond the league match with Wolves at Wembley on Dec 29, but are expected to issue an update later this week.
