Handsome payouts for Mourinho - three sacks full

LONDON รข€¢ Another three-year cycle has ended with yet another Jose Mourinho sacking and a handsome payout.
The Portuguese manager's reign at Manchester United - despite signing an improved deal to 2020 just 11 months ago - was cut short last Tuesday after the English Premier League football club's worst start to a season in 28 years.
His third firing - twice with Chelsea - was also partly triggered by a much-publicised breakdown in the relationship he had with several United players, notably Paul Pogba, Luke Shaw, Anthony Martial and Antonio Valencia.
The "Special One" has long had a history of falling out with those under his charge - from Iker Casillas at Real Madrid to Adrian Mutu and Mateja Kezman during his first Chelsea spell, and Juan Mata when he was reappointed.
Mourinho leaves Old Trafford with his reputation as one of football's most divisive characters even more pronounced, but he still remains a tempting proposition for any club willing to eschew aesthetics for short-term success.
However, there is a price to pay for appointing Mourinho as his past teams can attest to - not only the dressing room rifts and trail of bruised egos, but also the huge compensation figures he will command should things not work out.
According to The Daily Mail, United owe him ร‚£22.5 million (S$39 million) as the club are still in the running for the Champions League, entitling him to a 25 per cent bonus on top of his basic salary package of ร‚£18 million.

  • $86.8m

Jose Mourinho's reported sum of payouts (ร‚£50 million) from his sackings at Chelsea (twice) and Manchester United.

The 55-year-old reportedly pocketed ร‚£18 million from Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich when he experienced his first dismissal in September 2007 after a series of rows with the Russian, despite leading the club to six trophies in three years at Stamford Bridge.
While the pair patched things up, leading to his re-hiring by the Blues in the summer of 2013, The Mirror claimed Mourinho received another ร‚£9.5 million payoff after a run of nine losses in 16 Premier League games left his position untenable on Dec 17, 2015.
The only club where Mourinho has not been richly rewarded despite things ending on a sour note has been Real. Club president Florentino Perez insisted in May 2013 that there was "no compensation" for him. The LaLiga giants then announced they had reached a "mutual agreement" to end their three-year relationship at the end of the term.

It is but we have almost completely decoupled the concept of personal financial expose and business failure. There is also a fair argument to say that if you manage a failing company and they lose £200m one year and £100m the next year then you can say you have done a good job and deserve a bonus.

This was Mourinho's second spell with Chelsea. He previously managed the Blues from 2004-2007 before leaving for Inter Milan. The Portuguese manager has never made it through three consecutive seasons with any club. "Chelsea Football Club and Jose Mourinho have today parted company by mutual consent," the team said in a statement.

Spurs living the European dream

Spurs living the European dream

LONDON รข€¢ Tottenham's casualty list makes for grim reading.
Harry Kane, Erik Lamela and Harry Winks and Serge Aurier are all injured. There are doubts over Moussa Sissoko and Jan Vertonghen. And, crucially, Son Heung-min is suspended.
But, ahead of the first leg of their Champions League semi-final with Ajax today, Mauricio Pochettino believes his injury-hit squad can "go to infinity and beyond".
Having upset the odds to end Manchester City's quest for an unprecedented quadruple, the Spurs manager insisted at his pre-match press conference yesterday that their strength as a collective can overcome Ajax's talented group of rising stars at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Argentinian, who has led the north London club to the last four of the Champions League for the first time, is relishing being among European football's elite after cracking rarefied territory.
He said: "To be in a Champions League semi-final is something I dreamed about. You need to settle your dreams.
"The chance to play a semi-final for Tottenham has not happened often (their last appearance at this stage was in the 1962 European Cup).

RARING TO GO
To be in a Champions League semi-final is something I dreamed about. You need to settle your dreams...
It is impossible to be tired, impossible to not be excited to play. I am sure there is no doubt we will have the energy for 90 minutes.
MAURICIO POCHETTINO, Tottenham manager, on preparing his side for their semi-final.

"We are in a circumstance that is not going to change and we must be ready.
"It is impossible to be tired, impossible to not be excited to play. I am sure there is no doubt we will have the energy for 90 minutes."
However, while Pochettino's stretched team were slipping to a sixth defeat in their last 10 Premier League games to West Ham on Saturday, surrendering their unbeaten record at their new ground, Ajax have had a full week to rest as the Dutch league calendar for the weekend was postponed to allow them extra time to prepare.
While Son's ban means Pochettino is robbed of another goal threat, already diminished through Kane's absence, he remains confident their teamwork can compensate for a perceived lack of firepower.
The 47-year-old said: "The point is that we arrive where we are now because we were a team and we are going to be a team.
"I don't care who is going to score. Always, it's an issue to not have all the players fit but, in front of any name, was the team, the collective."
Pochettino, though, will be keenly aware Ajax, who are also enjoying their own footballing renaissance with their first semi-final appearance in 22 years, "have no fear of anyone".
The Dutch outfit are gunning for the treble - last achieved by the 1972 Johan Cryuff-led team - they top the Eredivisie table on goal difference from PSV Eindhoven and play Willem II in next month's Dutch Cup final.
Yet the Champions League remains their main "objective" as Erik ten Hag's players want to write themselves into the club's folklore before the team get inevitably broken up in the summer.
Although Ajax's remarkable progression from the qualifying rounds has come at a price - Frenkie de Jong has agreed a summer blockbuster move to Barcelona - while captain Matthijs de Ligt, Hakim Ziyech and David Neres are set to follow him out of the exit door, Andre Onana feels lifting their fifth European Cup and their first since 1995 would be the perfect send-off.
The Cameroon international, himself a Barcelona target, told Agence France-Presse: "Not just for the goal in and of itself, but for us, because after this season, there will be a lot of players who will leave.
"It is important for us to do something big. If that means winning the treble, that will be simply beautiful."

Glowing start for Stags' import

In the short span of 2 1/2 months and two games, Zehrudin Mehmedovic has proved that he could turn out to be an astute signing and key player for Tampines Rovers in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) this season.
Despite the language barrier, the 20-year-old attacking midfielder has settled down well with the Stags, scoring two goals in their last two games against Yangon United (3-1 win in the AFC Cup Group F opener) and Hougang United (5-1 win in SPL opener) last week.
"I'm very pleased that I played a part in helping the team win. We played two strong teams so I feel proud that I played a part in the two victories," said the Serb, who can speak only basic English.
He was brought in by Tampines' assistant coach Fahrudin Mustafic, who said: "He's a young player, but he's very creative. These days, there aren't many No. 10 players who can give you quality final passes and can receive the ball around the box and score.
"So he adds that extra quality and he's doing well so far.
"It's a huge step for him to come to a foreign country, but he has been training hard and showing signs of improvement."
While he acknowledged that the young player still has a long way to go, he believes that if Mehmedovic continues to work hard, he can stamp his mark on the SPL.

Setting his sights on a trophy this season, the youngster said: "I came here to win something with Tampines."
After two wins, the Stags hope to continue their good start with another victory against Home United at Our Tampines Hub today.
The Protectors won the Community Shield on Feb 23 after beating SPL defending champions Albirex Niigata in a penalty shoot-out, but lost 1-0 to Brunei DPMM in their first league game last week.
"I think the fans can expect a good exciting game as both teams play attacking and entertaining football," said Mustafic.
Home will miss their influential South Korean midfielder Song Ui-young, who scored 20 goals for the Protectors last season but is sidelined with a groin injury.
Home coach Saswadimata Dasuki said: "Song is a good attacker and we are missing his creativity and ability to bang the goals in. But we still have players we can rotate and experiment with to adapt to his absence.
"Tampines have started the season well and scored goals from different sources, but that doesn't mean we will sit back. We will still be going for the three points with our own style," he said.

Football: Tottenham return home with vital win over Palace

LONDON (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur marked their long-awaited homecoming with a vital 2-0 win over Crystal Palace in the first Premier League game at their new stadium on Wednesday (April 3) to revive their faltering top-four hopes.
It was hardly a classic to mark the official opening of the spectacular 62,062-seat stadium, but second-half goals by Son Heung-min and Christian Eriksen ensured the London club began a new era with a win to move back above Arsenal into third place.
"It's just amazing. What an unbelievable stadium. The noise was just so loud," Sough Korean Son, whose 12th league goal of the season came in front of the stadium's steepling 17,500-seat single tier South Stand, told Sky Sports.
"To score the first goal at this stadium. White Hart Lane is our history but the new stadium... I can't believe it."
Having moved out of their historic old stadium in May 2017, Tottenham have lodged at Wembley for nearly two seasons after building issues caused a six-month delay to their new arena.
After a couple of test events the official opening was marked by a pre-match ceremony involving a brass band, a school choir and fireworks illuminating the golden cockerel sitting proudly on top of the South Stand.
Tottenham's worst slump in Mauricio Pochettino's five years in charge - one point from five games - had seen his side's outside shot at the title replaced by the fear of being swallowed by the chasing pack in the race for a top-four spot.
After failing to get an early breakthrough the anxiety began to show, with Eriksen and Danny Rose both failing to capitalise on chances while Harry Kane had a free kick deflected wide.
It was left to Son, Tottenham's often unsung hero, to break the deadlock and etch his name into the club's history books.
Eriksen did well to win back possession and play in Son on the right and the striker then cut in before firing goalwards - his shot diverting wickedly off Palace skipper Luka Milivojevic to wrong-foot keeper Vicente Guaita.
With Tottenham's fans finally creating the atmosphere the occasion merited, Kane blazed over before his stumbling run into the area ended with Eriksen sweeping home from close range.
Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris made two superb late saves to spare the fans a nail-biting finale and send them inside to christen the stadium's array of swanky new bars with a crucial win to celebrate.
Victory lifted Spurs back into third spot having been overtaken by local rivals Arsenal at the weekend.
They have 64 points from 32 games with neighbours Arsenal, having played a game less, on 63 along with Chelsea, who beat Brighton & Hove Albion 3-0, while Manchester United are on 61 in the race for Champions League spots.

Football: Aston Villa meet Derby in play-off battle for 170 million prize

LONDON (REUTERS) - Aston Villa face Derby County in the Championship play-off final on Monday (May 27) with both clubs desperate for a return to the Premier League in a game billed as the richest in world football with at least ร‚£170 million (S$297 million) on the line.
Villa have been out of the top flight for three seasons while Derby have been stuck in the second tier of English football since relegation in 2008.
A 10-match winning streak during the run-in propelled Dean Smith's Villa into the playoffs where they got past West Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion.
"The key thing is momentum," said former Brentford manager Smith, who took over from Steve Bruce at Villa Park in October. "I feel we have a lot of that going into it (the final), given our run towards the end of the season and our two dominant play-off games. We can take it into the final."
Derby produced a brilliant performance with a 4-2 win over Leeds United in their play-off second leg at Elland Road earning them a place at Wembley.
Derby manager Frank Lampard, the former Chelsea and England midfielder who is in his first season as a manager, believes his team are well suited for the high-pressure encounter.
"The 'Cup' football feeling has been good for us. We've had to get results for a while now, going back to probably the QPR game (a 2-0 home win on April 22). We'll need big game mentality on Monday," he said.
Lampard is up against his former club and international team-mate John Terry, who is Smith's assistant at Villa.
The two clubs have proud histories. Seven-time English champions Villa were European Cup winners in 1982, while Derby were twice English champions in the 1970s.
Champions Norwich City and runners-up Sheffield United have already secured promotion to the top flight and the rewards for Villa and Derby joining them are eye-watering.
According to analysis from Deloitte's Sports Business Group, promotion will bring an increase in revenue of at least ร‚£170 million, rising to a minimum of ร‚£300 million if the play-off winners avoid relegation in their first season.
The ร‚£170 million includes ร‚£95 million in revenue from playing in the Premier League in 2019-20, mostly from broadcast and commercial revenue, and a total of ร‚£75 million in parachute payments in 2020-21 and 2021-22 if they go straight down.
However, the ร‚£170 million rises to at least ร‚£300 million if they survive their first season in the top flight.
